Do you want to know 6 of the most common issues we see with fire rated doors?

Our certified fire door inspector Scott Jeli says that these 6 signs are the most common issues for why your fire rated doors are not building code compliant. Or they why they do not meet NFPA 80 standards. Don’t worry, they can be fixed! If you’re in a pinch, HESI offers same day inspections for swinging fire rated doors in Oregon and Washington.

Here are 6 common NFPA 80 issues we look for in fire door inspections:

1.  Painting over fire door labels

Fire door labels state how long a code compliant fire door assembly is expected to protect the opening. This can range between 20 minutes to 3 hours. However, if one component in the fire door assembly is not code compliant, this can break the effectiveness of the entire fire door assembly. Fire door labels must be clearly visible and legible.

2.  Removal of fire door labels

A fire door label is one of NFPA 80’s fire rated door requirements. As noted above, fire door labels must be clearly visible and legible.

3.  Holes in doors

Open holes or breaks in the surface of the door or frame means the whole assembly has failed.

4.  Improper signage

Signage attached to your fire door must meet the limitations of NFPA 80 on size and attachment.

5.  Gaps on the fire door assembly

The door, frame and all hardware must be secured and aligned properly. Simply, all door and door hardware must be in working order.

6.  Broken door closing devices

The fire door closer or closing device must be operational where the door closes completely from the fully open position.

There are 7 other inspection criteria currently required by NFPA 80 which our certified fire door inspector examines. The importance of code compliance cannot be stressed enough! Fire doors are one of the key components to ensure the safety of the residents in your building.

Some modifications to your fire rated door may require fire door recertification. Only a few entities provide fire door recertification, HESI does not at this time, however, we are able to help coordinate and streamline this process for our customers.
